Poetry: all the words you need

Where a Word can do more than a Sword.

Poetry dedicatet to a Grandad

Grandpa Grumps

This is the name they all give you
Old grumpy, the grouchy old cad
But i know different, you’re lovely
My granddad, the dad of my dad

I remember when i was a youngen
You taught me the use of a spade
And we dug every day the allotment
And so many good veggies we made

You never was great at smiling
And wasn’t strong on small talk
But you gave me years of pleasure
Just showing me things as we walked

Yes i know that inside you’re a softy
And much nicer than people portray
I love you so much dearest granddad
And more so on today your birthday

Granddad my mate

I recall the time i cut my knee
You my mate came running to me
Picked me up, said soldiers don’t cry
Then took me out for a train set to buy

When i started going out with girls
You told me, ‘always treat as pearls’
Then as i grew and started to work
Showed me how to never shirk

As i married and i had a son
Was you became his number one
Always there to take him out
My mate i cannot live without

But time passed too swiftly by
And then the call that made me cry
Now a special guard is on heavens gate
That’s you granddad, my best mate

Grandpa

Who is always there when i need an ear?
Who gives me sips of his best bitter beer?
Who tells grandma he ate all her buns?
When the truth is that i was the one

Who takes me to school holding my hand?
Who hears my stories and all of my plans?
Who takes me swimming every weekend?
My grandpa, that’s who, my very best friend.
